Outline and Purpose of the Course  In this course, we closely read Francesco Petrarca's "Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta," which is at the origin of Italian lyric poetry. The aim of the course is to deepen our understanding of the Tuscan lyric tradition by paying attention not only to the content of the individual works but also to their formal characteristics.
Course Goals (1) To acquire the ability to read and understand poetry.
(2) To deepen students' understanding of the formal beauty of Italian verse.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction

Weeks 2-14: Students read the text and examine points of rhythm and rhetoric of Petrarca’s Lyrics. The course will emphasize accuracy in reading.

Week 15: Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be evaluated through quizzes conducted in each class.
Course Requirements An understanding of Italian grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) The participants are required to adequately understand the original text and read it aloud before class to familiarize themselves with the rhythms of Italian verse.
