Outline and Purpose of the Course Reading of the Chunqiu Zuozhuan Zhengyi, one of the Shisanjing Zhushu
Course Goals Mastery of precise grammatical interpretation of historical materials in classic Chinese, understanding the fundamental methods of Confucian Classic studies, and usage as research materials on the history of the Spring and Autumn period
Schedule and Contents This seminar continued from the former half of this school year. The Chunqiujing with a form of the Annals of the Lu state and the Zuozhuan with a form of its commentary are fundamental materials for studying the history of the Spring and Autumn period. The Zuozhuan is commented by Du Yu's Chunqiu Jingzhuan Jijie in the Western Jin era, which is further commented by Kong Yingda's Zhengyi in the Tang era. The objectives of this seminar are as follows:
(1) Mastery of exact grammatical interpretation of historical materials in classic Chinese through precise reading of the Zhengyi.
(2) Understanding the fundamental methods of Confucian Classics studies through a survey of literatures until the Tang era quoted by the Zhengyi, as well as by mastery of the logical construction of the Zhengyi.
(3) Mastery of methods for studying the history of pre-imperial China by considering the editorial process of the Chunqiujing and Zuozhuan, and with comprehensive reference to literatures and excavated texts of the pre-imperial era.

The first to the fifteenth: Reading of the Chunqiu Zuozhuan Zhengyi.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) A student must prepare up to two pages every time, regardless of whether he/she has duty of presentation or not.
The survey of literatures quoted as well as grammatical interpretation is inevitable.
