Outline and Purpose of the Course Apabhramsa is the latest language of the Middle Indo-Aryan languages, and it was used in many Jain literary works, especially from the 9th to the 12th century. A significant genre of Jain literature is Hagiographical literature. Their general plots are common to Hindu Rama and Krishna narratives. However, there are many elements unique to the works of Jains.

After an overview of Apabhramsa grammar and Jain literature, we will read two texts. The texts we will be reading are Paumacariu by Svayambhu (9th-10th century) and Mahapurana by Puspadanta (10th century), both of which are notable works of early Apabramsa literature. The former is a Jain Rama story, and the latter is a hagiography dealing with all the 63 great men of Jain mythology.
We will compare the Rama and Krishna narratives of Hindu tradition with Jain narrative works and discuss how and why Jains adopted these stories as the main elements of their literature.
Course Goals Students will acquire the ability to read Apabhramsa and to use Jain Apabhramsa literature in their research. They will also understand why Jains has incorporated Rama's and Krishna's narratives in common with Hinduism.

Course Requirements Basic ability of Sanskrit literacy. It is helpful to know Maharashtri Prakrit.
