Outline and Purpose of the Course To study the latest research on the cognitive abilities of a diverse range of animal species, including humans, and to examine the evolution of the mind from a comparative cognitive science perspective.
Course Goals In comparative cognitive science, appropriate experiment procedures are required for the species of animal to be studied. Along with learning about various experimental methods through the latest research, students will learn how to position, compare, and examine the results obtained from an experiment. They will also consider the evolution of the mind through empirical research. The primary topics covered are consciousness, introspection, and emotions.
Schedule and Contents Session 1: Introduction
Sessions 2-14: Over the course of two or three class sessions, cognitive studies on humans and other animals will be introduced, and students will develop their basic subject knowledge. In subsequent sessions, each student will introduce the latest research papers related to topics covered in the lectures, and all students will discuss the research methods in detail. The lecture course will generally be segmented into three or four sessions per topic.
Session 15: Each student will present their opinion on topics related to the evolution of the mind, and all will engage in discussion around the topic.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment will be based on discussion content at each class session (30%), presentation and discussion when the student is the presenter (40%), and final discussion (30%).

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Examine works related to the topic of each class session and actively participate in discussions.
