Outline and Purpose of the Course Music is an art assembled in time. Music has been established within various mechanisms of society and has been nurtured in association with people’s behavioral styles and values. Therefore, the evaluation for a certain music cannot be reduced only to the nature of the music, and the social meaning bestowed on it cannot be considered separately. This course aims to learn the basics of music theory as well as to acquire the necessary abilities to study music in an interdisciplinary manner.
Course Goals The goal of this course is for students to acquire the ability to apply quantitative analytical methods to various studies on music culture. In this lecture, we use statistical analysis software R to analyze actual music. Each student will need to set up their computers for this purpose. In weeks 01 to 03, I will explain how to setup and operate the software. Then, in weeks 04 to 10, we will conduct acoustic analysis. In weeks 11 to 14, we will conduct music score analysis. Through this course, we will outline various theories covering the establishment of music, methods of composing data, and Japanese music (traditional music, song and J-POP), and finally conduct practical analyses of musical works chosen by each student.
