Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, students will select papers in a foreign language (foreign language with respect to the first language of the student concerned. Papers may be in English, Chinese, or any other language) based on their interest. They will introduce the contents therein, and make their position in academia easier to understand for other participants of the course (including the lecturer).
In the past, styles of preparing a thesis have changed a lot depending on the language. Even now, there are "mannerisms" peculiar to Japanese, or Chinese, or English, but the difference has been levelled to some extent due to influences of English-language papers. Course objectives will be achieved when students gain a certain standard undertstanding while reading foreign papers, and can individually comprehend the issues therein.
Course Goals 1. By learning the "mannerisms" of foreign language papers, students can develop an understanding of the style of their native language papers.
2. Students can perform one of the few "article reviews" in Japan ["Review and Outlook" in the Journal of Historical Science (Shigaku Zasshi) is just an introduction] in class, and create their own evaluation, while posing questions about them.
3. By putting themselves in the place of a reviewer, students can reflect on themselves as contributors.
