Outline and Purpose of the Course This course aims to introduce students to French contemporary society and culture while increasing their conversation ability. It will address cultural, social and political issues. Various documents will be used, such as articles, movies, podcasts, documentaries, songs, etc. Particular emphasis will be placed on interactional skills and class time will be spent engaging in debates and other speaking exercises.
Course Goals This course is designed to help students:
- develop a deeper understanding of French contemporary society and culture
- explore intercultural issues
- engage in critical thinking and debate with others
- improve their argumentative skills
- gain confidence and experience in public speaking
Schedule and Contents After an introductory lecture (week 1) presenting the goals and exercices of the course, we will debate on various themes, through written and visual documents (week 2-14).
This class requires active oral participation.

Evaluation Methods and Policy This course uses a project-based pedagogy. Attendance and participation are essential for this course. Students are expected to fully and actively participate by expressing their own thoughts, but also listening carefully to others and asking questions. The students will be evaluated through continuous assessment : this includes oral participation, interaction with the others, but also oral presentation in front of the class.
Course Requirements The course is open to all students as soon as they can speak and understand enough French to read the documents and participate in a discussion.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Regular readings will be required before class.
