Outline and Purpose of the Course This course examines the possibility of constructing a theory of macrosociology based on action theory by comparing it with system theory. We will take up representative researchers, mainly from English and German speaking countries (A. Giddens, J. Coleman, J. Alexander, H. Esser, R. M?nch, H. Joas, U. Schimank, T. Schwinn, etc.) and sequentially read the related literature. Students will be assigned reports and summaries of the literature based on their language abilities (use English or Japanese translations where available).
In addition to this, interim reports of the master's thesis and doctoral dissertations will also be presented by the students as appropriate.
