Outline and Purpose of the Course | The goal of syntactic theory is to understand the human mind by studying humans' linguistic competence. One endeavor in this field is generative grammar theory. In this course, we will focus on the concept of interrogative sentences in English (wh-movement or the transfer phenomenon), which is widely discussed in generative grammar theory, to learn about the frame of mind of generative grammar theory. | |||
Course Goals |
(1) Understand the frame of mind of generative grammar theory. (2) Understand the development of theories on interrogative sentences. (3) Be able to express basic sentence structures of languages (especially English and Japanese) using tree diagrams, brackets, etc. (4) Understand the syntactic differences between Japanese and English in the framework of generative grammar theory. |

Schedule and Contents |
Lectures will follow the plan below. However, small changes may be made depending on lecture progress. Evaluation Methods and Policy | Comprehensive assessment of homework and a final report. Final reports with an original point of view based on class content, and which have the necessary data collection and analysis, will be given high marks. | |||
