Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will be required to read Russian texts on the internet. This plays an important role in the linguistic activity of people today. Students of the master's course will be expected to give a presentation on their research topics.
Course Goals ・Developing a perspective on the impact that the internet, something that can no longer be ignored in today's life, has on language, and how the internet should be used for language research.
・Improving reading comprehension of Russian texts with specialized content.
Schedule and Contents Classes will primarily involve students taking turns to read text from Языковой вкус в интернет-эпохи в России (Language Preferences in the Internet Age in Russia). The main themes are as following:

・Internet based communication and its impact on language
・Writing style on the internet
・Word formation on the internet
・New roles of symbols (e.g. hyphens, hashtags) on the internet

In addition, other literature will be covered as required.
A total of fifteen classes will be conducted, each subject will be covered in two to four classes.
Students in the master's program will be expected to present simple reports on their research topic thrice during the semester.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Comprehensive evaluation will be based on class participation (50 percent) and endterm report (50 percent)
Course Requirements Students should have atleast taken the Russian II class, so that they can read Russian texts with the help of a dictionary.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to prepare relevant portions of the text that will be covered in class the following week.
Students may also be asked to collect specific examples of the phenomena covered in the text (in Russian or other languages).

References, etc. Passages from Г.Н. Трофимова Языковой вкус интернет-эпохи в России (2009) will be distributed in class.
