| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The Vedic language (ancient Sanskrit), which dates back to the year 1400 BCE, is an Indo-European language. Because of the credibility and abundance of its literature, this language is a central part of studies on ancient Indo-European languages. In this class, we will read the oldest text in this language, the Rig Veda, as well as annotated editions, and examine them from the perspectives of linguistics and P?nini grammar. | |||
| Course Goals |
・Gain the ability to read the Vedic language. ・Deepen knowledge of the Vedic language as an ancient Indo-European language. ・Cultivate the ability to think of the Vedic language from the perspective of a linguist. ・Improve critical thinking and be able to seek out research topics on one's own. |

| Schedule and Contents |
In this class, we will read the text at the pace of one to two stanzas per week. 1. Hymn 1 (7 weeks) 2. Hymn 2 (7 weeks) 3. Feedback, etc. (1 week) |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy | Assessment based on degree of preparation. Credit will not be given to students with four or more absences. | |||
