Outline and Purpose of the Course The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a composite state which dominated broad areas from the south coast of the Baltic Sea to the steppe north from the Black Sea. Its territories extended over the boundary between the Western and Eastern Christianity and its inhabitants contained non-Christian people. How did this state integrate the population with various confessions, languages and strata? How did the inhabitants communicate with each other? This lecture aims to explain these problems in concrete terms.
Course Goals This lecture aims at understanding historical characteristics of early modern East European society from the point of view of the history of religion, language and communication.
Schedule and Contents This lecture will take up problems as follows:
1) The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as a multi-confessional and multilingual state. (Weeks 1-3)
2) Social strata in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. (Weeks 4-6)
3) Merkuriusz Polski: the first newspaper in Polish language. (Weeks 7-9)
4) Between a news paper and a love letter: the media policy of the Polish royal power. (Weeks 10-11)
5) The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Republic of Letters. (Weeks 12-13)

Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be evaluated through a examination in the end of the semester.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to read the reference books mentioned in the lecture.
References, etc. The lecturer will introduce related literatures.
