Outline and Purpose of the Course This class is designed to help students develop their argumentative skills and will provide key techniques, guidelines and suggestions to improve their academic written communication in French. Various exercices will be carried out, such as summary, synthesis, or text commentary.
Finally, the course will provide masters'students with efficient tools to write their thesis in French (i.e defining a topic and formulating a problem statement, selecting and reviewing relevant literature, structuring the dissertation, etc.)
Course Goals Upon completion of the course, students should be able to :
- efficiently structure and develop an argumentation
- provide texts that meet the demands of various academic purposes
- master the methodology required to complete a master's thesis
Schedule and Contents After an introductory lecture (week 1) presenting the main goals of the course, we will carry out various exercices and go through the different steps required to complete a master's thesis (weeks 2-14). Feedback: week 15.
Evaluation Methods and Policy The students will be evaluated through continuous assessment Exercices will be regularly carried out and evaluated during the class. Some home assignments will be given throughout the semester.
Course Requirements This course is opened to the students of the Faculty of Letters as well as to the students of other faculties (humanities, social sciences). A sufficient level of French is required, since the course will be given only in French.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to prepare exercices at home and to actively participate during the class.
