| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
We will read texts from the years of the Qing dynasty Shunzhi Emperor, which were compiled in the Ming and Qing Archives (『明清档案』) and are being published by Academia Sinica. We will also look at the process of Chinese control from perspective of the Qing dynasty. The transition from Ming to Qing has been understood as a major incident, known as "the China-Barbarian perversion" in Japan, and was presented as news in Europe by missionaries. However, historical descriptions of the upheaval in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and the research that has followed it, has been overly biased toward the "defeated" side. This process has continued to this day, such as through the emphasis placed on the Manchu dynasty's significance in world history. By reading these historical materials again, we will calmly look at the process of establishing control from the point of view of the victors. This year, we will read archives from Shunzhi Year 6 (1649) in order to use the documents to approach the Qing dynasty's process of trial and error regarding control. |

1. Acquire skills for independent reading by engaging with unpunctuated Chinese texts. 2. Become proficient regarding the different forms of government documents. 3. Deepen our understanding of Chinese conquest history in the Qing dynasty. |

| Schedule and Contents |
Week 1: Explanation of the nature of the text 『明清档案』 and commentary on the political situation from 1644-1648, while also referring to what was read in the previous year. Plan to read one book per class session. Weeks 2-14: We will take up the following themes from this text. Week 15: Feedback |
