Outline and Purpose of the Course Herman Melville（1819-91）の短篇小説“Bartleby, The Scrivener: A Story of Wall-street”（1853）および本作を扱った先行研究・批評を読む。毎回の授業では、作品にまつわる歴史的・政治社会的事象（作者の伝記や19世紀アメリカン・ルネサンスをめぐる文学史・文化史など）に関する講義もまじえながら、基本的には受講者による発表とディスカッションを中心に、課題範囲を演習形式で考察する。授業の前半では“Bartleby”のテクストおよびコンテクストを吟味し、後半では20世紀以降に書かれた“Bartleby”論（英文）を粋形式で精読する。19世紀アメリカの先住民問題との関連でMelvilleを読み解いたLucy MaddoxのRemovals: Nineteenth-Century American Literature and the Politics of Indian Affairs（1991）のほか、Gilles Deleuzeの“Bartleby; or, The Formula”（1989）やGiorgio Agambenの“Bartleby, or On Contingency”（1993）といった現代思想における“Bartleby”への応答例、あるいはJenny OdellのHow to Do Nothing（2019）のような本作に注目したごく最近のメディア論を取り上げる予定。
Course Goals 比較的難易度の高いテクストの解釈に取り組むことにより、文章の一語一句に込められた微妙なニュアンスが読み取れるような英文解釈のセンスに磨きをかける。同時に、批評理論・文化理論や関連する欧米の文化事象についての知識と理解を深めるなかで、作品のテクスト／コンテクストを読み解く批評眼を養う。

Evaluation Methods and Policy 期末レポート50%と発表課題30%、平常点20%（毎回の授業中の発言やディスカッションへの貢献、授業後のコメント提出）を総合的に判断する。
