| Outline and Purpose of the Course | In this seminar, by closely reading German-language literature on art history, we will aim to deepen our understanding of issues in art history, while developing practical German reading comprehension skills. | |||

| Schedule and Contents |
Continuing on from last year, this year, through a close reading of Oskar Bätschmann's Einführung in die kunstgeschichtliche Hermeneutik (Darmstadt, 1986; 2001), we will cultivate a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding "interpreting paintings." Week 1: Introduction Along with an overview explanation of the text to be read, we will also summarize the study material from the previous year. We will introduce reference works and academic sites useful for self-study, as well as notify students of class procedures and preparation methods. We will also determine the parts of the text assigned to each participant. Weeks 2-14: Close Reading of Selections from the Above Collected Works We will closely read the above text and discuss its contents according to the methods indicated in the introduction. Progress will vary drastically depending on the proficiency level of the leaders, so an exact plan of each class session cannot be posted. However, we will arrange for each student to have the opportunity to present a close reading at least once every one or two weeks. Supplementary explanations will be given for difficult terminology and historical events. Week 15: Final Exam Week 16: Feedback (details will be explained in class) |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Assessment of class participation (attendance, presentation of assigned close reading sections) (40%) and a final exam (60%) will be made based on level of achievement regarding the learning goals. ・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences. ・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences. |

| Course Requirements |
・Acquisition of elementary level German. ・Students are not required to have prior knowledge of Western art history, but each student should attend class enthusiastically, with their own awareness of the issues. |

| Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Before class, students should prepare by independently conducting close readings of the text, looking up unknown vocabulary, correctly understanding the grammatical structure, and translating the text into appropriate Japanese. | |||
