Schedule and Contents Continuing on from last year, this year, through a close reading of Oskar Bätschmann's Einführung in die kunstgeschichtliche Hermeneutik (Darmstadt, 1986; 2001), we will cultivate a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding "interpreting paintings."

Week 1: Introduction
Along with an overview explanation of the text to be read, we will also summarize the study material from the previous year. We will introduce reference works and academic sites useful for self-study, as well as notify students of class procedures and preparation methods. We will also determine the parts of the text assigned to each participant.

Weeks 2-14: Close Reading of Selections from the Above Collected Works
We will closely read the above text and discuss its contents according to the methods indicated in the introduction. Progress will vary drastically depending on the proficiency level of the leaders, so an exact plan of each class session cannot be posted. However, we will arrange for each student to have the opportunity to present a close reading at least once every one or two weeks. Supplementary explanations will be given for difficult terminology and historical events.
