Outline and Purpose of the Course | Jainism, a religion that is still practiced today through religious organizations in India, has origins that stretch back to the same period as the formation of Buddhism, and the two religions have much in common. Ardhamagadhi (Amg), used in the Jain Svetambara scriptures, is a Prakrit language (Middle Indian) with some resemblance to Pali. We will gain familiarity with Prakrit by reading texts written in Amg. | |||
Course Goals | To understand the characteristics of Prakrit, which has different phonetic changes and grammar from Sanskrit, by reading texts written in Ardhamagadhi. To learn to use references texts needed to investigate the meanings and forms of words. | |||
Schedule and Contents |
Session 1: Outline of Ardhamagadhi, introduction of dictionaries and reference books, and to the Jain Svetambara sect that has transmitted Amg texts Session 2: Vowel and consonant phonetic changes Session 3: Noun changes Session 4: Pronoun changes Session 5: Conjugation of a-stem and e-stem verbs (present and future tense) Session 6: Past tense, participles, etc. Sessions 7~10: Chapter 1 of 『アーバッサヤ』 summarizing commonly recited fixed-form phrases and prose sections of Chapter 4 of 『ダサヴェーヤーリヤ』 discussing the five mahavratas, listing prohibited acts for monks Sessions 11~14: Chapter 3 of 『ダサヴェーヤーリヤ』, listing prohibited acts for monks Session 15: Overall summary, including topics remaining from the first 14 sessions |

Preparation: students with knowledge of Sanskrit should check the Sanskrit versions of the same grammatical points to be studied. Review: check grammatical points after each class session. |
