Outline and Purpose of the Course Middle Chinese phonology is a base for the study of Old Chinese and Modern Chinese phonology and indispensable for the study of the various Chinese dialects and the reading of characters. This course provides basic knowledge and concepts of Middle Chinese phonology and introduces related topics (especially technical terms in the Chinese language, character dictionary, dictionary, etc.). It also introduces the relationship between Middle Chinese phonology and Old Chinese phonology.
Course Goals Students will be able to understand the basic concepts of Middle Chinese phonology and learn its initial consonants and compound vowels. They will also be able to explain the technical terminology of Chinese phonology using phonetic terms and understand the formation and general flow of character and rhyme dictionaries and synonymicon.
Schedule and Contents The first half of the course covers the basic concepts of Middle Chinese phonology. Students must memorize the basic technical terms of Middle Chinese phonology and Old Chinese phonology by Week 10 (they will be given some time to memorize during class as well).
Week 1 to 3: Orientation: Tone phonetics, phonological theories, and Chinese phonology terminology
Week 4 to 6: Chinese rhyme dictionary and Fanqie
Week 7 to 9: Rhyme tables, dialects, and character sounds
Week 10: Middle Chinese phonology terminology
The second half of the course introduces topics related to Middle Chinese phonology.
Week 11 to 14: Character dictionary and dictionary
Week 15: Summary and feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Based on active participation in class discussions (20%), a quiz (50%), and a paaper (30%)

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Instructions will be given in class as required, but students must memorize the technical terms.
