Outline and Purpose of the Course The Mandarin (官話) under focus refers to the common language spoken in China during the Ming and Qing periods, and not the dialects widespread in the country, which are now called Mandarin dialects (官話方言). This historical common language is depicted and discussed in various forms in the literature, but there is no definitive definition yet on the actual form it took. This course considers Mandarin’s character through a careful reading and understanding of the language that appeared in various literature materials during the Ming and Qing periods.
Course Goals By reading the literature materials, students will learn about Mandarin’s various forms, with the goal of deepening their understanding of the Chinese language.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
Week 2 to 5: The emergence of Mandarin: From the literature of the Ming Dynasty
Week 6 to 10: The transformation of Mandarin: From the literature of the Qing Dynasty
Week 11 to 14: Mandarin crosses the sea: From the literature of Ryukyu and Nagasaki
Week 15: Summary
Evaluation Methods and Policy Based on participation (brief reports and in-class involvement) (50%) and semester-end paper (50%)
