Outline and Purpose of the Course We have read Mao Yuanyi(茅元儀)'s letters. He is famous for writing a brilliant military book, "Wubei Zhi(武備志)," at the end of the Ming dynasty. This year, we will read his letters and memorials from the 7th year of Tianqi (1627) to the 4th year of Chongzhen (1631). When the new emperor took the throne, he resurfaced, and although he was once ousted, he was once again at the forefront of the battle. However, he was finally exiled to Fujian. It was one of the most difficult times in his life and a turbulent time for the Ming dynasty. The purpose of this class is to view the state of the Ming Dynasty in the first years of Chongzhen through his perspective.
Course Goals 1. By reading the non-punctured text, you will acquire the ability to puncture on your own.
2. You can know how to read a letter as a historical document.
3. You can learn about Ming elites’ view of politics and culture.
