Outline and Purpose of the Course The period of Ancient History in Japan is generally referenced as the period from the 2nd and 3rd centuries to the 11th century. The first half of this period, the Kofun Period, saw the first political unification of the Japanese archipelago. Close ties with the Korean Peninsula were maintained and a relatively gentle version of an autocratic government was established. In the 7th century, centralization was promoted in response to changes in the international arena, and the so-called Ritsuryo system was established. The Ritsuryo system was patterned after China's political system and was an advanced form of governance based on bureaucracy and a civil system. It had a major impact on the society and culture that characterized the Japanese archipelago at that time. As if keeping pace with the decline of the Tang Dynasty, the Ritsuryo system also entered a period of decline in the 9th and 10 centuries. Under such a scenario, a new political system called the Regency Government emerged, the Heian aristocracy prospered, and the classical Japanese culture blossomed. The politics, society, and culture of this era continued into the Medieval Ages.
In this course, among the various events comprising ancient Japanese history mentioned above, we will address clans of before the 7th century, and discuss the characteristics of the politics during the ancient period.
