Outline and Purpose of the Course The sculptures of the Asuka period underwent an interesting development when the continent’s culture was depicted in them between the beginning of the 7th century and 710. This course aims to clarify the characteristics of these sculptures by discussing the style, technique, and figurative image in detail while examining specific pieces.
Course Goals By studying in detail the latest research findings related to the history of Japanese sculpture, the objectives for students are to learn about the diverse developments in the history of sculpture and deepen their understanding of not only the study of art history but also religion and society at that time.

Evaluation Methods and Policy Based on term-end report (80%) and participation (in-class involvement) (20%). The evaluation is designed to mainly assess students’ level of comprehension of the historical development of Japanese sculpture during the Asuka period based on concrete works and in relation to the academic field.
