| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
A bird's-eye view of the world of the 17th century through the activities of both Dutch companies and individuals. Of the two India companies, the East India Company（VOC）tends to be the focus of attention (especially in Japan). In recent years, attention has also been focused on the activities of the West India company（WIC）, of which the old company has survived for only half a century. In this lecture, I will trace the activities of Dutch people or persons who have worked under the the companies in various parts of the world, including the Atlantic world, in chronological order. In particular, by exploring their perceptions of the world, I want to grasp the historical characteristics of the early modern world. |
