Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will read the poetry of Tingjian Huang (Shangu Huang, 1045-1105), a famous poet of the Jiangxi school. Students will acquire a deeper comprehension of classical poetry and gain a better understanding of the Song Dynasty literature by translating the poetry.
Course Goals Based on the traditional classical annotations in China, students will develop the ability to present their interpretations. In addition, by referring to Muromachi-period text annotations from the Japanese medieval period, they will gain an understanding of the Five Mountains Chinese Classical literature (Gozan Literature).
Schedule and Contents In continuation of the previous term, the students will read Volume 12 of 『山谷詩集注』(内集) 「次韻楊明叔四首」其三. While referring to the annotations and Chinese excerpts from Ren Yuan『帳中香』. One of the students will be given the responsiblity to prepare a detailed report and a translation with notes, and the students will have a discussion based on this.
Lecture 1 Introduction
Overview of Tingjian Huang and his collection. References, etc. will be introduced, and students will be instructed on how to proceed, and how to prepare and present before the class.
Lecture 2-14 Intensive reading of works by Tingjian Huang
We will read one poem per lecture from『山谷詩集注』Vol. 2. Discussions on the interpretation and background of the work will be conducted.
Lecture 15 Conclusion
Based on carefully reading the text, we will summarize the status and issues.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on class participation (responsibility of class content, remarks).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students who are not presenting should also prepare to participate every week. Students must read the appropriate text and commentary notes.
