| Outline and Purpose of the Course | Students will read the poetry of Tingjian Huang (Shangu Huang, 1045-1105), a famous poet of the Jiangxi school. Students will acquire a deeper comprehension of classical poetry and gain a better understanding of the Song Dynasty literature by translating the poetry. | |||
| Course Goals | Based on the traditional classical annotations in China, students will develop the ability to present their own interpretations. In addition, by referring to Muromachi-period text annotations from the Japanese medieval period, they will gain an understanding of the Five Mountains Chinese Classical literature (Gozan Literature). | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
We will read from『山谷詩集注』（内集）巻六「和答子瞻. While referring to annotations and Chinese excerpts of Ren Yuan『帳中香, one of the students will be responsible for preparing a detailed report and a translation with notes. The students will have a discussion based on it. Lecture 1 Introduction Overview of Tingjian Huang and the Tingjian Huang Collection. References, etc. will be introduced, and students will be instructed on how to proceed, and how to prepare and present before the class. Lecture 2-14 Intensive reading One poem per class will be read from Volume 6 of Tingjian Huang's 『山谷詩集注』 , and discussions will be conducted on the interpretation and background of the work. Lecture 15 Conclusion Based on carefully reading of the text, we will summarize the status and issues faced. |
