| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The majority of world languages exist through the medium of speech, and knowledge of phonetics is indispensable in language descriptions. The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is commonly used to describe speech. The goal of this practicum is to master the IPA through practice. | |||
| Course Goals |
・Learn IPA pronunciation. ・Be able to reflect on what is happening in which parts of the speech organs when producing speech. ・Be able to take phonetic notation using IPA. ・Through learning IPA pronunciation and listening, build a foundation for describing various speech sounds. |

| Schedule and Contents |
After explaining the speech organs, airflow, and vocalizations, we will practice IPA pronunciation and listening. Students will bring examples from the languages they are learning and we will discuss the pronunciation and notation of these languages as a class. Week 1: Introduction, Structure of the Speech Organs Week 2: Airflow and Vocalization Week 3: Plosive Sounds Week 4: Nasal Sounds, Trills, and Flaps Week 5: Fricatives (1) [Quiz 1] Week 6: Fricatives (2) Week 7: Approximants, Other Consonants Week 8: Non-Pulmonic Consonants (1) Week 9: Non-Pulmonic Consonants (2) [Quiz 2] Week 10: Summary of Consonants, Notation Practice Week 11: Primary Cardinal Vowels Week 12: Secondary Cardinal Vowels, Other Vowels Week 13: Summary of Vowels, Notation Practice [Quiz 3] Week 14: General Review and Pronunciation Test 1 Week 15: General Review and Pronunciation Test 2 |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Assessment based on a sum of the following items. ・Class participation (20%, including presentations) ・Quizzes (3 listening tests, 10% each) ・Pronunciation test (40%) ・Reports (10%) |

| Course Requirements | No requirements will be set, but it is preferable for students to have learned the foundations of phonetics in an introductory course on linguistics. | |||
| Study outside of Class (preparation and review) |
Check the pronunciation and notation of sounds learned in class. Independently practice the pronunciations you couldn't achieve in class and, if necessary, check with the instructor in following classes (before or after class). Based on things learned in class, observe once again the pronunciations of the languages you are studying and bring your observations to class. |
