Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, we will focus on cognitive semantics and examine various phenomena related to the expansion of meaning in language, such as metaphor, metonymy, and subjectivity.
Course Goals ・To understand the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, and learn points of view to apply to linguistic research.
・To cultivate powers of observation for linguistic matters.
Schedule and Contents In class, we will cover several major cognitive linguistics (especially cognitive semantics) topics below according to students' interests and prior studies, and closely read works on these topics. The plan is to cover each topic over the course of about two weeks.

Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be assessed comprehensively on end-of-term reports (70%) and efforts in class (30%).
Course Requirements ・Basic general linguistics knowledge, or cognitive linguistics knowledge.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Approach class sessions having read the assigned paper and clarified its problem points.
