| Outline and Purpose of the Course | In this course, students will use their knowledge of Russian vocabulary and grammar to cultivate their skills in writing texts in the Russian language. There will be a special focus on practicing translating sentence structures. Since there are major differences between Russian and Japanese in terms of grammatical structure and cultural background, it is only natural that there are expressions unique to Japanese or to Russian. Therefore, what we write often does not come across in Russian, or sounds awkward, if we merely translate it word for word. The technique of replacing each word does help expand one's vocabulary, but replacing sentence structures takes some getting used to, and requires proper practice. The aims of this class is to learn typical patterns for translating by sentence structure, and gain practice in this method, to greatly improve students' Russian usage skills. | |||

| Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Whether in your native language or a foreign language, your writing ability cannot be cultivated without going through active, hands-on trial and error. Therefore, students are expected to carefully read the assigned sections of the textbook before each class session and tackle the writing assignments accordingly. | |||
