Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This course aims to provide students with a rough framework of the various dialects in China and an overview of each dialect’s characteristics. It also introduces the relationship between Middle Chinese phonology and Old Chinese phonology from a historical perspective. |

Course Goals | Students will be able to understand the Chinese dialect framework and explain each dialect’s characteristics. They will learn how to study the dialects that are peculiar to the Chinese language. | |||
Schedule and Contents |
The schedule is as follows, but depending on how the course progresses and students’ situation, the order and number of classes assigned to each topic may change. Part 1: The basics Week 1 to 3: Orientation: Review of tone phonetics, phonological theories, and predicates in Chinese Week 4 to 6: Overview of Chinese dialects Week 7 to 9: Relationship between Middle Chinese phonology and Old Chinese phonology, and methods to study Chinese dialects Part 2: Specific cases and findings from recent studies Weeks 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14: Each week, a different dialect and its characteristics will be discussed. Week 15: Feedback |
