Outline and Purpose of the Course | The purpose of this lecture course is to learn the characteristics of poetry prefaces that took root in Chinese literary history with the sudden rise of the Tang Dynasty by reading and comprehending these works. In this course, we will use the perspective of East Asian classical literature not only to examine poetry prefaces written in China, but also those from Japan, particularly those written from the Nara to Heian periods. | |||
Course Goals | Poetry prefaces are a chief genre of Chinese literary prose. By closely reading and understanding these works, students can gain a better understanding of Chinese literature and its relation to society at that time.
