Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will understand the basic structure of Chinese studies by learning the four-part classification system.
Course Goals By using volume classification to learn the characteristics of cultures that use the Chinese writing system, students will cultivate a broad view that extends beyond the academic framework originating in modern Western culture.
Schedule and Contents Based on the book 『京都大学人文科学研究所漢籍分類一覧』, the course will explain the classification system and introduce various topics related to Chinese classics.
Content and order of class sessions is subject to change depending on course progress.

3. The classics, the Five Classics, etc. (annotations and compilations ~ Spring and Autumnal Annals)
4. The classics, the Four Books, etc. (the Four Books ~ traditional Chinese philology)

7. Historical works, systems, biographies, geography (imperial orders ~ government works)
8. Historical works, materials, historical theories (bibliographies ~ historical commentary)

Feedback methods will be indicated during class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy The primary method will be reports, with the addition of class participation points.
Grades will be based 60% on reports and 40% on class participation.
High marks will be given to reports that were created in a way that clearly shows a proactive approach, referencing original texts, etc.
