Outline and Purpose of the Course Paul Ricoeur's "The Symbolism of Evil" was published in 1960 as the second volume of "Finitude et culpabilite," and it is a monumental work that turned Ricoeur to hermeneutical philosophy. At the same time, the majority of this book assigns semantic interpretations of symbolic and mythological expressions of evil, sought extensively in the Bible and in myths from other cultures. It shows Ricoeur going beyond the limits of traditional philosophy to profoundly contemplate the birthplaces of religious expressions as he updates his own philosophical standpoint.
In this seminar, we will intensively examine important excerpts from the first part of this work, "The Primary Symbols: Defilement, Sin, Guilt," and examine the intersections between philosophy and religion in Ricoeur's hermeneutical origins to use this as material for investigating the potential of philosophy of religion.

Course Goals 1. To acquire basic reading comprehension skills for thoroughly reading texts on French philosophy and philosophy of religion by reading and orally translating in this seminar.
2. To acquire reading comprehension methods for closely reading texts on philosophy and philosophy of religion, and a basic methodological stance for applying one's own thinking by receiving guidance from the professor.
3. To understand Ricoeur's root questions and their significance in philosophy and philosophy of religion by closely reading an important text by Ricoeur under the direction and commentary of the professor.
