| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This text is the graduation thesis that Keiji Nishitani submitted to the Kyoto Imperial University Faculty of letters in 1924; it is a monumental work of over 100,000 characters. This thesis, written in an extremely condensed style that would be impossible to imagine from the transparent literary style of his later years, presents research on Schelling and Bergson that could stand up to academic scrutiny. In this work, he not only intersects and positions both thinkers within the history of Western philosophy, he also attempts to independently cut through to the primordial perspective while arguing with each thinker directly; this thesis is the origin of Nishitani's own thinking. In the background, there are glimpses of the presence of Master Nishida, who had been polishing a unique philosophy from "self-awareness" to "place." This text, with its multilayered structure, has not really been studied head-on, but it is not only an important work as the point of departure for Nishitani's philosophy of religion, it is also a first-rate document from the point of view of Western philosophy historical studies and Japanese history of philosophy studies. Based on the nature of this text, in this seminar, we will test approaches from various angles while incorporating reading comprehension of source texts by Schelling and Bergson, who are referenced in this work. I would like to make this a space for students to train their investigative reading comprehension skills. |

| Course Goals |
1. To acquire basic reading comprehension skills for thoroughly reading texts on philosophy and the philosophy of religion by completing the tasks of this seminar. 2. To acquire reading comprehension methods for closely reading texts on philosophy and philosophy of religion, and a basic methodological stance for applying one's own thinking by preparing presentations in the seminar and by receiving guidance from the professor. 3. To get a foothold for understanding Nishitani's philosophy of religion by fully reading an important text by Keiji Nishitani under the direction and commentary of the professor. |

| Schedule and Contents |
Session 1 Introduction The professor will give an introductory explanation necessary for reading through the text. Leaders for the ensuing sessions will be decided. Sessions 2~14 Keiji Nishitani's "シェリングの絶対的観念論とベルクソンの純粋持続" consists of a preface and 13 sections, so we will proceed with reading at a pace of about one section per class session. The leader of each class session will summarize the contents of the section for which they are responsible and translate the sections of Schelling and Bergson that Nishitani references. The professor will use the leader's report as material for giving an overall explanation, and based on this, all students will engage in an exchange of opinions and discussion. The basic plan is to finish reading the entire work in one semester. Session 15 We will reflect on the entire work, have a Q&A with the professor, and students will discuss the work together. *Feedback methods will be indicated in class. |

| Course Requirements |
There are no specific subjects, courses, or prerequisite knowledge expected as absolute conditions for taking this course, but it is preferable for students to have a minimal level of reading comprehension skills in French or German. |

| Study outside of Class (preparation and review) |
Students are expected to take the time to read the text intensively before class, and to completely examine its content and language. They should also prepare questions on the topics they would like to investigate more deeply according to their own interest in the issues. After class, students should correct the sections in which their own understanding was incorrect, use their own words to summarize the content of the section that was read, and connect everything to their own learning by reading related texts. |
