Outline and Purpose of the Course A beginner-level seminar for those who have already studied basic Sanskrit grammar. Students will learn early Sanskrit (Vedic Sanskrit) grammar and methodologies for reading original texts while reading the original texts of Vedic scriptures.
Course Goals To learn techniques for accurately analyzing writings in Sanskrit, and to gain basic reading comprehension skills that can be applied to any genre of Sanskrit writing. To gain the ability to read and understand early Sanskrit (Vedic Sanskrit) in particular, which has unique features such as word forms.
Schedule and Contents Using Lanman, C. R., A Sanskrit Reader as a textbook, we will study the sections that cite Vedic scriptures.
The Vedic scriptures cited are wide-ranging, including hymns written in verse and explanations of theological rites recorded in prose, and we will touch on diverse writing styles and content. Students will use the vocabulary lists in A Sanskrit Reader to translate the source text ahead of time, and present these translations in class. The professor will also introduce technical books needed when studying the original texts and teach students about the basics of using these books.

Session 1: General outline of Vedic scriptures.
Sessions 2~15: Intensive reading of texts (Rigveda, Maitrayani Samhita, Satapatha Brahmana).
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments will be based on class participation (reading preparation and review of class content).
Course Requirements Students should already have studied Sanskrit grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation and review are required for each class session.
