| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This is an elementary Sanskrit reading class, targeted on the students who have just finished the Sanskrit Grammar. It aims that students master their grammatical knowledge by reading easy Sanskrit proses and verses from the Reader with vocabulary and at the end they become able to use the dictionaries and read a variety of Sanskrit texts by themselves. If there is any request, this class can be held in the two languages, English and Japanese. |

| Course Goals | Students will master the grammatical knowledge of Sanskrit and acquire the philological skill of reading it. Also, they will become able to use the Sanskrit dictionaries. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
Class 1: Explanation of basic tools and a review of some siginificant points of Sanskrit grammar, such as analysis of compound, sentence sturcture and metrics. Classes 2-6: Reading some chapters from the Nalopakhyana. Classes 7--11: Reading some stories from the Hitopadesa. Classes 12--14: Reading some stories from the Kathasaritsagara. Class 15: Examination Class 16: Feedback (how to feedback is indicated in the class) How much we read at each class depends on the level of partcipants. In principle, we read the text slowly with grammatical explanation during the first few classes, and then so about two pages at each class. |

Preparation and review before and after each class are required, but a review after each class is more important than preparation before it. Students should attend on class, even if they do not make the sufficient preparation, and review the text after the class. Students who have not learned the Devanagari script should learn it by themselves before the start of class, using a grammar book of Sanskrit or Hindi. |
