| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
Pali is the chief language used in transcribing Theravada Buddhist scriptures. Along with Sanskrit and Tibetan, it is an exceedingly useful language for advancing one's learning and research concerning Indian classical studies and Buddhist studies. By understanding the phonological characteristics of Pali, students can expect to enhance their knowledge of ancient Indian languages like classical Sanskrit and Vedic Sanskrit. The goal is to gain Pali reading comprehension skills by reading texts such as the relatively short fables recorded in the Jaatakatthavannanaa (the commentary of Jataka; the story of a previous birth of the Buddha)). Grammatical matters will be explained as needed while we read. |

| Course Goals | To gain vocabulary and reading skills that allow one to read original texts in Pali independently, as needed for future learning and research. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
Session 1: Introduction ・About Pali (outline of linguistic characteristics, etc.) ・Introduction of dictionaries and grammar books needed for intensive reading ・Hand out of printed texts for reading ・Outline of texts for reading Sessions 2-5: Reading texts (Somadattajaataka, the jataka of Somadatta) Sessions 6-12: Reading texts (Assakajaataka, the jataka of the King Assaka) Sessions 10-14: Reading texts (Sabbadaatajaataka, the jataka of Sabbadaata) End-of-semester exam Session 15: Feedback ・In general, we will read in turns. Grammar and other matters essential to understanding the text will be explained as necessary. ・Course progress is subject to change depending on students' level of understanding. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Class participation (text reading ability, and proactiveness toward understanding the content: 50 points) and end-of-semester exam (50 points). (*The end-of-semester exam questions will involve sight-reading of texts and students will be allowed to bring dictionaries and grammar books.) |
