Outline and Purpose of the Course The course objective is to improve the quality of the master's thesis and doctoral dissertations prepared by students. This is an opportunity for graduate students to report on their research, and cultivate thinking and analytical skills through question-answer sessions and discussions.
Course Goals 1. Deepen the ability to research by making presentations and answering related questions.
2. Learn to present research in an easy-to-understand manner to researchers who specialize in different subjects.
3. Learn to understand presentations of researchers in different fields and ask questions in a simple and concise manner.
4. Learn to understand the logic behind presentations and point out problems in the logic.
Schedule and Contents Graduate students will make a presentation at least once a year on the progress and outcome of their research. Those who inted to submit a master's thesis will present once each in the first and the second semester. After the presentation, there will be time for questions and discussions to deepen the understanding of various linguistic issues. Presenters must prepare handouts that reflects their research results a few days before the presentation.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on class participation. This would include, class presentation and critical comments and questions during presentations made by other students.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Presenters must submit their handouts by the Monday of the week of their presentation. The argument should be understandable just by reading the handout. The students who are not presenting must read and prepare questions by the day of the presentation. Questions and comments must be concise and should be easy to understand and answer.
