Outline and Purpose of the Course Topics in vision sciences will be discussed on the basis of psychophysics and neuroscience. The primary aim is to learn the basic theoretical and methodological issues in vision sciences so that the students will be able to utilise them in their own studies. Lectures on basic topics will be given in the first half. In the latter half, each student will be required to read at least one recent paper and give presentation for discussion in the class.

Course Goals To learn the basic knowledge and skills that are required in understanding recent topics in vision science and also in conducting their own experiments.
Schedule and Contents In the first half, lectures will be given for the following topics (1-2 weeks for each)
1. introduction
2. visual signals
3. receptive fields and convolution
4. models of early visual processing
5. stimulus generation
6. basics of MRI
7. fMRI and analyses
In the latter half, each student will read at least one paper and present it in the class for discussion by all attendants. (-14 weeks). The number of weeks for lecturing and presentations will be adjusted depending on the number of attendants.

Evaluation Methods and Policy The student's own presentation, plus participation in discussion will be evaluated.
Course Requirements Advanced skill of Japanese language for understanding the lectures and taking part in discussion.
Basic knowledge in experimental psychology (or other related areas such as neuroscience) will be required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) In the first half, further studies will be suggested in the lectures.
For the latter half, each student will be required to select a recent paper on vision science and prepare for presentation in the class. The paper should be notified at least one week before each presentation, and other students should have a look before attending to the class.
