Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will carefully read historical materials of temples and shrines in the medieval period of Japan and learn how to read historical materials, as well as how to study medieval history, and consider the characteristics of Japanese medieval society from a multifaceted viewpoint such as politics, socioeconomics, religion, and culture.
Course Goals Acquire the ability to read and decipher medieval historical materials accurately.
Acquire the ability to construct arguments and theses from concrete historical materials.
Schedule and Contents 1. Introduction
 We will go over all the details on how to proceed with the course and how to prepare and present. In addition, we will decide on the sections that each student will be in charge.

2 to 29. Detailed reading of historical materials of medieval temples and shrines
 Students will rewrite the assigned section, review the content, present it, and discuss it with all members.

30. Summary
 Summarize the findings from the detailed reading and discuss all remaining issues and questions.
