Outline and Purpose of the Course Special Research Project II aims to lead students to identify their own challneges concerning “human survivability studies” and to make them acquire global leadership qualities through practices that provide solutions for the challenges, promoting research abilities in their chosen discipline on the basis of basic research skills and scholarship acquired through Special Research Seminar I, II, and Special Research Project I, as well as acquainting them with the current challenges facing human beings, social systems, and global society through one-year Fieldwork (Overseas Knight-Errantry). This Fieldwork requires students to implement challenge solutions and decision making, after broadening their views on “human survivability studies” and making them set their challenges and the path to solve them. In addition, the mentor/teaching advisor and other advisors provide appropriate advice toward preparation of their dissertation, based on their reported research progress and results.
Course Goals To make students acquire the necessary approach for solving challenges with global perspectives creatively through on-site activities of the Fieldwork (Overseas Knight-Errantry).
Schedule and Contents This project is regarded as international practice (Fieldwork) that aims to deploy research results in society. For this purpose, various approach tasks ranging from investigation, policy planning, project implementation, negotiation, to presentation of results are included. Besides attending to the work of the host organization, planning of practical research activities to strengthen the students’ own specific themes is expected. Mentors/teaching advisors, in coordination with research advisors, keep contact with students in Fieldwork by e-mail or Skype and visit the site to guide and advise them when necessary. Mentors/teaching advisors coordinate problem solving with the host organization’s advisors depending on the results of the quarterly meeting between the student and the host organization’s supervisor.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students should prepare and submit an interim report (about 6 A4 size sheets) and an completion report (about 20 A4 size sheets) within 1 week after returning home.
Comprehensively evaluate how much a global perspective was obtained at overseas internship result presentation session.
Course Requirements Attendance at Special International Seminars three times within each year between the first and third year is required to have credits for fieldwork (“Knight-errantry”) recognized, in principle.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preliminary investigation for PBR.
