Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of this course is to develop a broad perspective and a mind that can take care of the vulnerable people who need assistance. To achieve this goal, students will choose one of the following four fieldworks.

(1) Nursing home: Investigation through interaction with the elderly at a nursing home (prior learning required)
(2) International Workcamps: volunteering, where groups of volunteers work and live together as a team on a short-term basis.
(3) Overseas Service Learning: Fieldwork in a developing country
(4) Volunteer activities: A volunteer activity for about a week (Find the activity for yourself)

Note) Some of (1), (2) and/or (3) might be cancelled by the partner institutions. The details will be explained at the guidance of Service Learning A/B.
Course Goals 1) To understand the reality of our society such as the super-aged society and the vulnerable people.
2) To think about quality and happiness of life.
3) To develop voluntary mind.
Schedule and Contents Choose one of the following four fieldworks. The details will be explained at the guidance. (Some sessions and fieldworks might be cancelled or conducted online due to COVID-19.)

(1) "Nursing home"
1) Pre-activity sessions (lectures, presentations by students, and orientation for field work)
2) Field works at a nursing home (3days in August)
3) Final presentation and term paper

(2) "International Workcamps"
1) Pre-activity sessions (orientation for field work)
2) Join the workcamp
3) Final presentation and term paper

(3) "Overseas Service Learning"
1) Pre-activity sessions (lectures and orientation for field work)
2) Field works in Laos
3) Final presentation and term paper

(4) "Volunteer Activities" (for those who need social support)
If you want to choose this option, you need notify the school (kyomu at GSAIS) of your intention by May 31st of the 1st year, then submit the activity plan by 2 months before the activity. The total time of activity must be 45 hours or more. You will be required to finish the activity by the winter vacation of your 2nd year at the latest, and report learning outcome through presentation and term report.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on the submitted paper and the oral presentation.
Course Requirements (4) "Volunteer Activities" must be something for those who need social support. The total time of activity must be 45 hours or more.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Please be sure to attend the guidance of Service Learning A/B in April or May.
References, etc. The lecturer will assign reading materials during the preliminary study if necessary.
