Outline and Purpose of the Course Learning the methods of study of classical Chinese literature while improving reading ability in classical Chinese.
Course Goals To consider Japan's position in ancient East Asian culture, as well as develop advanced reading skills in classical Chinese, through the reading of Yang Shoujing's R? b?n f?ng sh? zh? (Japan Travelog).
Schedule and Contents Consider a variety of problems such as Japan-China cultural exchange, works of literature, and Chinese classics through the reading of Yang Shoujing's R? b?n f?ng sh? zh? (Japan Travelog). Each student will read and prepare commentary on a portion of the text before class. In class, participants will discuss the text based on these summaries.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading based on in-class presentation and participation in class discussions.
Course Requirements Preferable if students have completed a course in Chinese language. The purpose of this course is to teach students basic methods of research on classical China. Therefore, those not planning on writing papers on classical China and Japan should understand the course purpose before participating.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students must prepare and submit a summary of their assigned section prior to the respective class. Class participants will read each student’s summary, and review it sufficiently, to participate thoroughly in class discussions. The presenting student must revise his/her summary based on the class discussion.
