Outline and Purpose of the Course	The purpose of this course is to build an understanding of the characteristics of the poetry introductions that rose to prominence during the Tang Dynasty and became a standard in Chinese literary history, by reading the works themselves. In this course, we will examine poetry introductions written in not only China but also Japan, from the perspective of classical East Asian literature. In particular, we will focus on works from the Nara and Heian periods.
Course Goals	Poetry introductions are a major genre in Chinese literature. Through their reading, it is possible to deepen understanding of the relationship between Chinese literature and society at the time. Furthermore, reading poetry introductions written in classical Chinese in Japan can help students gain a practical understanding of the spread of the ancient East Asian world.

Evaluation Methods and Policy	Each student will be assigned a work to translate and present. Grades will be based on the in-class presentation (50%) and final report (50%).
Course Requirements	Preferable if students have completed a course in Chinese language. Knowledge of classical Chinese culture required. This course requires advanced study. Students who are not prepared to write papers on classical China and Japan will find it difficult.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review)	Gain a basic understanding of Chinese tones, and of the history of Chinese prose.
