Outline and Purpose of the Course Historical Records of the Tang Period - This course will focus on the texts (revisions) of the historical records used to study Tang period history. We will investigate such issues as the process by which so-called “popular histories” attained that status, and whether there are any problems with these texts.
Course Goals To learn the fundamentals of Tang Dynasty's historical records while deepening understanding of the circumstances of transmission and organization of historical records.
Schedule and Contents Each of the following themes will be covered over one to two weeks:

Evaluation Methods and Policy Participation 40% Final report grade 60%

・Participation grade will be based on short reports and quizzes assigned in class.
・Final report will be graded based on the student’s achievement of the course objectives. Reports showing thorough consideration and independent perspectives will be given higher grades. Plagiarism is considered as a form of cheating and will be dealt with strictly.
Course Requirements Understanding of basic elements of Chinese history, especially Shinkan-Sui and Tang Dynasties (overview level)
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Independently read the reference literature introduced in the texts under study, and deepen individual understanding of the content read.
