Outline and Purpose of the Course The Sui and Tang Dynasties' National Systems: Origin and Overview - There is a great deal of extant scholarship on the national systems (governing bodies) of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, which had diverse impacts on ancient Japan. This course will give an overview of the late Northern Dynasty to the early Tang Dynasty, with an eye to political historical trends. Through this review, we will renew our understanding of how the political systems of this era, which were often viewed as static, actually accomplished great change.
Course Goals To gain a comprehensive understanding of the national systems of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, which had a significant impact on the legal systems of ancient Japan, based on the political trends that led to their establishment.
Schedule and Contents Lectures spread over about two weeks will be held on each of the following topics.
 The first class (guidance) will explain the course plan for the semester and the items necessary for each lecture; therefore, attendance is mandatory for all.
1.Circumstances of the establishment of the Sui and Tang Dynasties and national systems

Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading based on the final report(100%): Report will be graded based on the student’s achievement of the course objectives. Reports showing thorough consideration and independent perspectives will be given higher grades. Plagiarism is considered as a form of cheating and will be dealt with strictly.
Course Requirements Basic knowledge of an overview of Chinese history (read overview before class)
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Read the overviews of Chinese history (including the reference literature listed in “References, etc.”) in advance.
