Outline and Purpose of the Course This is a general survey course of principles underlying research into teaching and learning. The research orientation is that of qualitative methods. This course is for language teachers or students who aspire to teach and research their own practice. A particular focus of this course will be on academic writing skills.
Course Goals Students will reflect on their academic writing and will engage in academic presentation/discussion as they learn about qualitative research methods in language education.
Schedule and Contents The following themes will normally take 1-2 weeks during the semester to cover. Students will present workshops on selected themes during the semester.

- Conversation Analysis (classroom interaction)
- Narrative study
- Observation (ethnography)
- Interview research
- Research on reflective teaching
- Case study research
- Survey research
- Mixed methods research
- Teacher cognition
- Course feedback

A case study approach to examining these areas of interest is maintained. Students also investigate research methods and present findings in workshops. Students will write short papers reflecting on what they have learned.

Course Requirements Students attending this course should have an interest in qualitative research, teaching and learning. Reading is required as this is a graduate seminar.
