Outline and Purpose of the Course In the course we will read and discuss material related to online intercultural exchanges and culturally unique psychological concepts with an indigenous psychology approach. The outline of the course will be structured around four major themes: 1) philosophical foundations of intercultural / transcultural understanding, 2) theory and practice of online intercultural exchange, 3) methods, and 4) topics such as amae (Japanese), sajiao (Chinese), manja (Javanese) and bildung (German).
Course Goals During the semester students will engage in online and face-to-face intercultural exchanges with members of lab teams / classes in Japan, China, Indonesia, and Germany. The goal is to discuss indigenous (emic) concepts, pose research questions / hypotheses about the concepts, and possibly conduct studies to research the concepts with the goal of intercultural understanding. Research proposals / studies may be presented and written up as final reports or comparison / contrast papers regarding the emic cultural concepts will be presented and submitted.

Evaluation Methods and Policy Means of evaluation:

Presentations and discussion questions = 50%
Final presentation = 25%
Final paper = 25%
Course Requirements We will use English in this course.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) 1. Students will present the material (using handouts and presentation slides) and lead discussions of one or two book chapters or research articles. For the weeks that students are not presenting, they will prepare discussion questions.

2. At the end of the course, students will submit a 2000-word research proposal/report or comparison / contrast paper from their notes from a topic that emerges from the intercultural exchanges and class discussions.
