Outline and Purpose of the Course 江戸時代後期から明治期にかけて、日本の美術を取り巻く環境は大きく変わった。
西洋と同様の長い伝統を持つ日本の美術は、いかに西洋美術と出会い、どのような変化を遂げたのか。制作の環境や社会環境に目を配りつつ歴史的に考察する。

From the late Edo period to the Meiji period, the environment surrounding Japanese art changed dramatically.
How did Japanese art, which has a long tradition similar to that of the West, encounter Western art and what changes did it undergo? We will examine this historically, paying attention to the surroundings of artistic production and the social milieu.
Course Goals 日本の近代における美術の変化を考えることにより、開化による革新と伝統的な美意識の持続の様相を理解すること。

To consider the changes in Japanese art in the modern era, and to understand the aspects of innovation through the adoption of western culture and the persistence of traditional aesthetics.

Evaluation Methods and Policy 授業への積極的参加（50％）とレポート提出（50％）により総合的に評価する。
Overall evaluation will be based on active participation in the class (50%) and submission of reports (50%).

Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) 参考文献のほか、『原色現代日本の美術』『日本美術全集』（小学館）、至文堂の〈日本の美術〉〈近代の美術〉シリーズ等の書籍を参照し、日本近代美術作品の図版を見ておく。また可能であれば、京都国立近代美術館、東京国立近代美術館、京都文化博物館、泉屋博古館等の美術館において日本近代美術が展示されている際には、実際に美術作品を鑑賞する。

In addition to the reference materials, students should refer to books such as "Gendai Nihon no Bijutsu", "Nihon Bijutsu Zenshu" (Shogakukan), and the "Nihon no Bijutsu" and "Modern Bijutsu" series by Shibundo, and look at illustrations of Japanese modern art works. Also, if possible, when Japanese modern art is on display at museums such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Museum of Kyoto and the Sen-oku hakukokan Museum, actually view the artworks.
