Outline and Purpose of the Course	地図と景観には、自然と人間の長きにわたる双方向の関係史が投影されている。たとえ現代の都市空間であろうと、地域の自然環境に適応し克服しようと試みた人間の活動の痕跡を、地図と景観の中に見出すことができる。歴史地理学は、このように地図と景観を通じて、自然環境と人間社会のダイナミックな地域史を研究している。 　本授業では、日本の代表的な歴史都市である城下町を取り上げる。16～17世紀という中世から近世の移行期に、日本各地で多くの城下町が建設され、それらは現代都市に引き継がれていた。本授業では、歴史地理学の視点から、地域／歴史／環境という文脈の中に埋め込まれた城下町の学術上の特性や空間構造を研究する方法を学ぶ。さらに、そのような研究をふまえて、現代社会における城下町という歴史遺産の保全・活用を行う方法を考察する。 　授業は実習・演習方式で行う。まずは、①歴史史料や先行研究をもとに、戦国・江戸時代初期の城下町の形態を現在の地図上に復原し、現代都市と過去の城下町の形態比較を行う。次に、②明治以降の新旧地形図の比較によって、地形や近代以降の土地利用変化を考察する。さらに、③様々な統計・資料類・調査報告書から、現代都市の自然環境、政策、計画等の状況を把握する。その上で、④現地を歩いて城下町以来の都市構造とその特性をフィールドから学ぶ。①～④は、歴史地理学のオーソドックスな調査方法である。 　地図を読み、作り、歩くという歴史地理学の基礎的な実践を通じて、都市を地域／歴史／環境という側面から、多面的に考察する視点と方法を学ぶ。本授業は日本語で実施する。 The maps and landscapes represent the long history of the interactive relationship between nature and human. We can find a lot of imprints of the human activities and challenges adapting, overcoming the local nature environment in the maps and landscapes, even if in the modern urban space. In this way, historical geography is studying the dynamic interactive local histories between the nature environment and human society. This course is taking up the castle towns, the typical historical towns in Japan. Many castle towns which were built in the 16th and 17th century, the transition period from the medieval to the early modern, developed and succeeded to the major Japanese modern cities. We will learn how to study the academic characters and spatial structures of the castle towns, embedded in the local, historical, and environmental contexts from the perspective of the historical geography. And more, we will consider how to preserve and make good use of the historical heritages of the castle towns in modern society. This course includes a lot of practical works. ① Students will reconstruct the spatial form of the castle town in the 16th and 17th century on the present city map according to the historical documents and preceding studies to compare the morphology of the present city and the old castle town. ② We will consider the land form and the changes of the land use of the castle town in the modern ages reading the several topographic maps. It will include discussion among students about the ideas from reading the maps. ③We will understand the present situation of the city including the natural environment, urban planning, policies from the analysis of the various statistics, public documents, research reports. Students will submit the research assignments and present by taking charge of the themes about the city (e.g., agriculture, population, industry, sightseeing, education, housing, heritage). ④ We can learn the urban structure walking around and looking at the details of the landscapes of the city (field work). After the field work, we will discuss the ideas of the spatial and environmental characters and problems of the city. ①～④ are the basic research methods of the historical geography. In this course of historical geography, you will learn how to make, interpret, and use maps/landscapes in order to find out the changing spatial features of historical towns. This exercise will enable you to situate these towns in local, historical, and environmental contexts. This class is performed in Japanese.
Course Goals	歴史地理学の視角にもとづいて、古地図や既存研究を適切に活用した実証的な景観復原、地形図の読図、巡検、地域／環境／歴史をふまえた都市空間の考察といった、歴史都市の地理学的研究の方法を身につける。 The aim of this course is to learn the introductory methodology of historical geography.
Schedule and Contents	対象地は初回授業日に設定する。 第1回：授業の概要説明、歴史地理学の視角と方法　 第2回：新旧地形図の読図、各自の調査テーマの設定・分担 第3回：城下町の景観復原図の作成 第4・5回：調査テーマの発表・討論 、巡検資料の作成 第6回：巡検資料の作成、城下町都市の空間構造と環境変化について講義 第7・8：巡検、まとめ・総括 The study field of the castle town will set at the first day of this course. 1.Explanation of course outline and of the aims, methods of Historical Geography 2.Reading topographic maps; Deciding research themes 3.Making the map of the castle town in the 16th and 17th century 4 and 5. Evaluation Methods and Policy	期末レポート（30%） 平常点：コメントペーパーの提出、景観復原図作成、読図・事前調査の発表・討論参加（70%）　 The 70 % of your grade consists of how you perform in the tasks and assignments given in the class. You are also required to submit a term paper, which constitutes the 30% of your grade. 到達目標について、地球環境学舎の成績評価基準に従って評価する。 Achievement level is assessed by GSGES's criteria.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review)	景観復原図の作成は、授業時間内に終えられなかった場合、宿題となる。新旧地形図の読図は、授業時間内の討論をふまえた上で、箇条書きでその内容をまとめて、次回に提出する。また、受講生で分担した地域の事前調査や、巡検の知見を撮影した写真を含めてまとめる巡検レポートの作成も宿題となる。 You are expected to complete your unfinished tasks and assignments outside the school.
