Outline and Purpose of the Course Case studies on the sustainable utilization of natural resources in Southeast Asia and the surrounding area, global issues on environment and human life using ecological system, ethnic issues, development, socioeconomic system, politics, and medicine. Lecture will be held in omnibus style by six professors who have a variety of academic backgrounds. Each topic will be discussed during a session of two lectures.
Course Goals To get the basic understanding development and sustainability from views of sustainable science, paying attention to physical environment, agriculture, society, culture, environment problem, medicine, care and local people organizations with explaining the cases in the Southeast Asia and its surrounding area.

6th (May 24): Livelihoods in Southeast Asian rural societies in transition 2 (Kobayashi)
7th (May 31): Natural Resources Distribution and Risk Management 1: State and Rebellion (Nishi)
8th (June 7): Natural Resources Distribution and Risk Management 2: Community and Household (Nishi)
9th (June 21): Nature and Rural Society 1: Mainland (Yanagisawa)
10th (June 28): Nature and Rural Society 2: Maritime society (Yanagisawa)
11th (July 5): Development and Economic Geography 1: Comparative Institutional Analysis of Cities (Machikita)

Evaluation Methods and Policy Final grading will be based on a report (about 50%) and attendance (about 50%). Active and constructive participation during the class discussions will influence your grade as well.
